about
When a group of 40 young women met in the private home of Mrs. James A. Baker on January 25, 1911, it was for the purpose of forming a club to meet regularly to study music and improve their knowledge in this area. For more than one hundred years the club has grown and adapted to the many changes of the past century, with the original vision still in place. Our goal is still to promote excellence in music within the Houston arts community.
The Houston Tuesday Musical Club, renamed upon incorporation in the late 1990’s as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has expanded its membership to include both men and women, professional musicians and talented amateurs, young musicians just launching their careers, retirees and all who simply love music and appreciate the opportunity to see and hear fine performances on a regular basis.
We still offer bi-weekly Tuesday meetings, an annual Musicale, an annual Artist Concert, our Ruth Burr Awards Competition for young pianists and instrumentalists ages 18 – 26 and vocalists ages 19 - 27, our Kahan Competition for gifted young pianists ages 6 – 9, and, of course, our HTMC chorus.
